Author Guidelines

  1. Journal Scope

The Journal of Nahdlatul Ulama Studies (JNUS) publishes high-quality scholarly articles related to Nahdlatul Ulama and broader Islamic scholarship. The journal promotes interdisciplinary studies within the following areas:

  • Islamic law and fiqh
  • Islamic economics and finance
  • Islamic history and civilization
  • Islamic traditions and rituals
  • Pesantren (Islamic education)
  • Islamic-Indonesian culture
  • Thought of Islamic scholars and intellectual traditions
  • Politics, society, and Islam
  • Nahdlatul Ulama studies and contemporary Muslim societies

The journal encourages theoretical, empirical, and interdisciplinary research that contributes to the advancement of knowledge in Islamic studies and social sciences.

  1. Types of Manuscripts

The journal accepts the following types of manuscripts:

Original Research Articles

Reports of original empirical research using qualitative, quantitative, or mixed methods.

Conceptual or Analytical Articles

Scholarly analyses that develop theoretical arguments or critical interpretations of existing literature.

Review Articles

Comprehensive reviews of scholarly literature that synthesize current knowledge and propose new research directions.

All manuscripts must present original work that has not been published previously and is not under consideration elsewhere.

  1. Manuscript Length and Formatting

Manuscripts must follow these formatting requirements:

  • Length: 6000–10000 words, including references
  • Font: Garamond, 12 pt
  • Line spacing: 5
  • Paper size: A4
  • Margins: 5 cm on all sides

Manuscripts should be written in clear academic English. Authors whose first language is not English are encouraged to have their manuscripts professionally edited before submission.

  1. Manuscript Structure

Title

The title should clearly reflect the content of the article. It must be concise, specific, and informative. Avoid abbreviations or overly general phrases.

Author Names

Provide the full names of all authors without academic titles such as Prof., Dr., or other professional designations.

Author Affiliations

Each author must provide a complete institutional affiliation, including:

  • Department or research unit
  • Faculty (if applicable)
  • University or institution name
  • City and country

Corresponding Author

One author must be designated as the corresponding author. Provide a valid email address for correspondence.

Abstract

The abstract must be written in English and Indonesian, each consisting of 150–200 words in a single paragraph.

The abstract should briefly include:

  • research background or problem
  • research objective
  • methodology
  • main findings
  • conclusions

Abstracts must not contain citations.

Keywords

Provide 3–5 keywords after the abstract. Keywords should represent the main concepts of the article and be separated by semicolons (;).

Example:

Keywords: pesantren; Islamic education; Nahdlatul Ulama; religious moderation

Introduction

The introduction should present:

  • background of the study
  • relevant literature review
  • research gap
  • research objectives or questions

Authors should demonstrate how the study contributes to existing scholarship.

Methodology

This section should clearly describe:

  • research design
  • data sources
  • data collection procedures
  • analytical methods
  • theoretical framework

The description must allow readers to understand how the research was conducted and how conclusions were reached.

Results and Discussion

The results and discussion may be presented in a combined section.

Authors should:

  • present key findings clearly
  • interpret results using relevant theories
  • compare findings with previous studies
  • highlight the contribution of the research

Tables and figures must follow these rules:

  • Table captions placed above the table
  • Figure captions placed below the figure
  • Number tables and figures sequentially
  • Each table or figure should occupy no more than two-thirds of a page

Conclusion

The conclusion should summarize the main findings and demonstrate how the research contributes to the field. It should also suggest implications or directions for future research.

Avoid repeating the abstract or listing results without interpretation.

  1. References

References must be arranged alphabetically and follow a recognized citation style (e.g., APA Style 7th Edition).

Requirements:

  • Minimum 25 references
  • At least 40% from peer-reviewed journal articles
  • Preferably published within the last 5 years

Authors must ensure the accuracy of all references, including:

  • author names
  • year of publication
  • title
  • journal name
  • volume and issue
  • page numbers
  • DOI (if available)

Authors are strongly encouraged to use reference management software, such as:

  • Mendeley
  • Zotero
  • EndNote
  1. Arabic Transliteration

Arabic terms that have not been absorbed into Indonesian must follow the official Arabic–Latin transliteration system based on the Joint Decree of the Indonesian Ministry of Religious Affairs and the Ministry of Education and Culture (1988).

  1. Ethical Standards

Publication Ethics

The journal follows ethical standards based on the guidelines of the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE).

Authorship Criteria

Authorship should be limited to individuals who have made significant contributions to the research, including:

  • conceptualization or research design
  • data collection or analysis
  • drafting or revising the manuscript

All authors must approve the final version of the manuscript before submission.

Plagiarism Policy

All manuscripts will be screened using plagiarism detection software.

The similarity index must not exceed 20%, excluding references and quotations.

Manuscripts that contain plagiarism will be rejected immediately.

Conflict of Interest

Authors must disclose any financial or personal relationships that could influence the research.

If no conflict exists, authors should state:

“No conflict of interest is declared by the authors.”

Funding Statement

Authors must acknowledge any financial support received for the research.

Example:

“This research was funded by the Ministry of Religious Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia under Grant No. XXXX.”

Data Availability Statement

Authors should provide information about the availability of research data.

Example:

“The data supporting the findings of this study are available from the corresponding author upon reasonable request.”

  1. Peer Review Process

All submitted manuscripts undergo a double-blind peer review process.

The review process includes:

  1. Initial editorial screening
  2. Double-blind peer review by at least two reviewers
  3. Editorial decision (accept, revise, or reject)

Authors may be asked to revise their manuscripts based on reviewer comments.

Manuscripts must be submitted through the Open Journal System (OJS):

Submission steps:

  1. Register as an author in the journal system.
  2. Log in to your account.
  3. Click New Submission.
  4. Upload the manuscript file (.doc, .docx, or .rtf).
  5. Complete the metadata and confirm submission.

  1. Submission Preparation Checklist

Before submission, authors must ensure that:

  • The manuscript has not been published previously and is not under consideration elsewhere.
  • The file format is DOC, DOCX, or RTF.
  • All references include complete bibliographic information and DOI or URL when available.
  • Tables and figures are placed within the text at appropriate locations.
  • The manuscript follows the formatting and referencing style described in these guidelines.
  • The manuscript file has been prepared for blind peer review by removing identifying information.

Failure to comply with these guidelines may result in the manuscript being returned to the authors for revision before review.
